ANTWAN LAWSON
I’ve lost count of the many stories coming out of this notoriously corrupt state, it’s either the prison guards or the cops, this time they almost killed a poor child, the story was posted by the local news WSVN7.COM, DATED 2/4/16
Child riding scooter struck by Miami Police cruiser
MIAMI (WSVN) — A 6-year-old child who was hit by a City of Miami Police cruiser is out of critical care and now recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Thursday.
Cell phone video captured the family’s utter panic moments after Antwan Lawson was struck.
According to Miami Police, Antwan was crossing the street in his scooter in the area of Northwest Fifth Avenue and 58th Street when he was hit, just after 4 p.m., Wednesday.
Witnesses said that the squad car was going between 50 and 60 miles per hour when the incident happened, resulting in the boy being dragged 30 to 40 feet before the car came to a stop. “[The officer] hit this corner doing 50, 60 miles per hour, bro,” said Raymond McNealy.
McNealy described to 7News what he witnessed. “I saw him get hit, man. He flew, man, he dragged him all the way down there, man, knocked him out of his shoes, man,” he said.
News cameras captured the child’s shoe still pinned underneath the squad car’s front right tire. “He was literally stuck under the car, she panicked,” said Ursula Rocha, who witnessed the boy being hit, “so she took him out from under the car. When he took his breath, he was bleeding out of his mouth.”
Janet Martinez, Jawan’s mother, described the moment she found out about her son. “They came running to my house, and they told me my son got run over by a police officer,” said his mother.
According to the boy’s family, he remained pinned under the cruiser until his grandmother came and pulled him out. Witnesses said good Samaritans helped out until rescue crews responded to the scene, about eight minutes after the accident.

Miami Police sent out the following statement regarding the crash: “City of Miami Police are investigating a traffic crash in which a police vehicle accidentally collided with a child, after the child darted out into the roadway on Northwest Fifth Avenue, just west of Northwest 58th Street. The young boy, who was riding a blue scooter at the time, suddenly appeared from between two parked trucks.”
Dramatic cellphone video captured the chaotic aftermath. “Give me a towel! Give me a towel!” someone is heard saying in the footage.
Officials said Antwan was alert and conscious as he was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. 7News cameras showed the 6-year-old flanked by family members as paramedics wheeled him into Ryder Trauma Center.
Antwan’s mother said he suffered multiple fractures. “He has a broken pelvis bone, a broken leg, a small cut on his spleen and a small cut on his liver,” said Martinez.
Meanwhile, Wednesday night, police blocked off Northwest Fifth Avenue, between 56th and 58th streets, while they investigated and interviewed witnesses.
Investigators said the officer was delivering paperwork to another unit when the boy darted into the street. “An officer’s job is to save lives, and when you hit someone, especially if it’s a child, you’re going to be shaken up,” said Miami Police Maj. Delrish Moss.
Now, Antwan’s loved ones are demanding answers. “What was he thinking? What was going on at the time? But I feel like it was negligence of the officer,” said Martinez. “I want to see some justice. Something has to get done because it doesn’t make sense that these officers are speeding for nothing.”
Police are investigating, and Antwan is expected to make a full recovery.
Family members said the accident took place just down the street from where the boy’s cousin was killed more than a year ago.
